A DIRTY JOB, PART I
My friend Paul is retired. A couple of weeks ago, he had hip surgery. Last week, I was mowing at his house as I typically do. Since he is still off of his feet for awhile, I was asked to do something "extra" this week.
As I finished mowing, turning the corner of his yard, I saw his wife, Linda, walking towards me.
She smiled real big and said, "Now, Paul wants you to clean out the dog pen."
Paul has 2 black labs. REALLY BIG black labs. Seriously, they look like bears!!!
I reluctantly agreed. After all, it was helping a friend out. Not to mention that Jesus demonstrated an attitude of servitude as HE WASHED FEET , AND He said that He was here to serve.
Now, let's not over spiritualize this scenario. I DID NOT want to clean a dog lot. Remember, big, black, bear dogs. No way. I did it anyway.
Off I went, buckets in hand, trudging up the hill to the lot. I got the shovel and the scoop and began working. You may recognize Mike Rowe in the picture above. That's who I felt like.
Funny thing about being a preacher is that the Holy Spirit will speak to you & give you crazy sermon illustrations in some of the strangest places.
I was in mid scoop when God spoke to my spirit and said, "This is a picture of Church work. This is what ministry is about." If you know me, then you guessed it, I chuckled.
Tomorrow, we will discuss this idea further and we will explore what could happen if we adopt this kind of mentality in our ministries.
